When I was studying photography, there was a time when I thought I should photograph ugliness. That in order to be a worthy photographer, I should become a photojournalist. I love Sebastiao Salgado's work. And Ed Kashi's. It's gorgeous and ugly and heartbreaking. Dead corpses in Ethiopia and Sudan. War in Afghanistan. Bodies destroyed by war and starvation. They show us the worst of human behavior, and we need to see that so we don't ignore it. But I'm not moved to action by those images. I need hope. I need a vision.Read More
